Do you know a friend or relative who can kick off their shoes and clear an entire room? Has smelly feet been an embarrassing problem for you. Even if you’re the sweetest smelling person, you may still stink up a pair of shoes by running a few miles in them. So what’s going on here? Why can feet create such bad odor? To answer this question, let’s begin with understanding why feet sweat in the first place.

Sweaty Feet

Sweaty feet can result in very smelly feet! And it just so happens that feet have more sweat glands than any other part of the body causing them to sweat profusely. For those who experience excessive perspiration, known as hyperhidrosis, smelly feet can be a constant problem. Enclosed footware keeps the sweat from evaporating like it can on the hands, so sweat is trapped inside with hungry bacteria.

Blame Bacteria

Smelly feet are often caused by bacteria feeding on sweat. There is a lot of sweat to go around for hungry bacteria. Since every foot has more than 250,000 sweat glands, you can imagine why feet smell so bad. As the bacteria feed on the sweat of your feet, they excrete isovaleric acid which is what causes the odor. You may wonder why one person’s smelly feet have a different smell than another person’s. The different feet smell is due to the presence of various bacterial species. You may have a certain form of bacteria that your friend or relative do not and, although both sets of feet may clear a room, the smells can be rather distinct.

Athletes Foot

Another major contributor to smelly feet is Athletes Foot or Tinea Pedis. This is actually a skin infection that comes from a fungus called Trichophyton. When areas of the feet stay hot and moist they become very irritated. The fungus is spread in showers, locker rooms and with clothing and socks.

Once the skin becomes injured by the fungus it can be invaded by bacteria that can cause all kinds of nasty complications that included dryness, cracking, and severe itching and can also include, intense “smelly feet.”

Smelly Feet Solutions

Total Beauty Experience is your source for stopping smelly feet. You can find everything you need to ward off embarrassing foot odor.

Sweaty Feet Formulas: Spray on solution that reduces perspiration of the feet.

Foot Deodorant: Refreshing foot sprays that kill odor-causing bacteria.

Shoe Deodorant: Simply spray the inside shoe to kill any bacteria living there and replace smelly odors with a fresh fragrance.

All of these products can be found easily at Total Beauty Experience. For feet you can be fond of, visit our Sacramento store today!

More Smelly Feet Tips

Bathe your feet daily with lukewarm water for the removal of bacteria. For excessive sweating (i.e. hyperhidrosis) bathe feet in the morning and evening;

To avoid such kind of smell wash your feet with anti-bacterial soap;

Wear clean and dry socks (made of cotton or wool that can absorb sweat) and change them daily;

Do not wear the same shoe everyday. Give your shoe at least a 24-hour breather to dry out and remove foul smells.

Pedicure Tips & Techniques

A pedicure is a pleasurable way to soothe aching feet as well as lift your spirits. Pedicures at home can be just as relaxing as they are rejuvenating. It’s so easy to achieve salon quality pedicures right at home. Simply follow the below tips and techniques and you’ll not only feel great but love showing off your toes!

Pedicure Step #1: Get Comfortable:

Find your most comfortable chair and relax into it.

Rest your feet on another chair or stool.

Take three relaxing, deep breaths before beginning.

Pedicure Step #2: Remove Nail Polish:

Saturate a cotton ball with nail polish remover.

Press and hold the cotton ball on your toe nail before wiping for a few seconds.

Wipe toe nail in a circular motion for easier removal.

Pedicure Step #3: Soak Your Feet:

Will a bowl or dishpan with warm (not hot) water.

Add your favorite bath salts or oils to the water to soften calluses and dry skin.

Try OPI Pedicure Soften – a callus softener with green tea extract. Includes non-abrasive alpha hydroxy acids, green tea extract, and OPI’s Avocado Lipid Complex gently soften calluses in preparation for exfoliation (Available at Total Beauty Experience)..

Soak feet for 10 to 15 minutes. Click here for more on foot baths.

As you work on one foot, keep the other foot in the warm water.

Pedicure Step #4: Toe Nail Cuticles:

Dry one foot and apply cuticle remover or cuticle softener.

Seche Soft Cuticle Softener Therapy softens the cuticle for easy release. Eliminate cuticle cutting and prevent hang nails with this AHA enriched cream (Available at Total Beauty Experience).

Use the wedged end of the orangewood stick to push the cuticle back.

Repeat this procedure on the other foot.

Pedicure Step #5: Shape Toe Nails:

Consider the length of your nails.

If toe nails are on the long side, use nail clippers to cut each toe nail to the desired length (careful not to cut nails too short as this may cause painful ingrown nails).

If toe nails are already at a good length for you, simply use an emery board to file the nail into a round or square shape. For thick toe nails you may wish to use a courser file.

File from corner of nail to center, working out to in – do this on both sides of each toe nail.

Remember: As you work on one foot, keep the other foot in the warm water, drying the foot that is just removed from the water.

Pedicure Step #6: Buffing Toe Nails:

Not unlike buffing a care, a nail buffer is used to smooth out toe and fingernails and remove any pits and ridges.

Toe nail buffers either come as a set of two or three separate texture tools or as a single 2-3 way buffing tool. Buffing textures range from gritty (for evening out ridges and removing stains) to ultra-smooth for bringing nails to a high shine.

Use the soft, spongy buffer to brush away loose nail dust and skin. Use the fine gritty buffers to buff the toenails.

Use a back-and-forth motion for best results and buff each nail for 15 seconds for every range of buffer.

Buffing is a great way to stimulate nail growth, but resign yourself to buffing nails once or twice a month as this practice can weaken nails.

Pedicure Step #7: Smooth Rough Skin:

Use a pumice stone to smooth rough spots on your feet, including corns and calluses. The pumice stone works like sand paper, taking off layers of rough skin. You may also use skin buffing sponge instead of the pumice stone.

Your skin should be sufficiently soft now that your feet have had ample time to soak. (Always soak feet before using a pumice stone.)

Dip the pumice stone in the warm water and with a back and forth motion, gently rub the pumice stone over rough heals and the balls of your feet. Do not rub too hard as this may cause bleeding.

Pedicure Step #8: Moisturize with a Massage:

Often the most favorite part of a pedicure, a moisturizing foot massage can do wonders for the mind, body and soul.

Massage a generous amount of lotion into the feet and legs, taking care to cover all the foot, especially the dry and flaky parts.

Use these great foot massage techniques for ultimate benefits.

Close your eyes and relax for 10 minutes, allowing your skin to soak in the soothing lotion.

Pedicure Step #9: Apply Favorite Nail Polish:

Gently insert toe separators or cotton balls between the toes. If you’re having a pedicure party, do not share toe separators.

Apply one coat of base coat over each nail, especially to prevent staining on the toe nail if you’ve chosen a dark nail polish. Allow one minute to dry.

Apply two coats of nail polish and let it dry for five minutes.

To prevent the nail polish from chipping and help it last longer, apply a top coat or a clear nail polish.

Pedicure Step #10: Stay Soft:

Once your toenails have completely dried, remove toe separators and apply a little more moisturizer.

Wear a pair of socks or spa booties to keep moisture locked in.

Keep an extra pumice stone in the shower to help maintain softness.

The above pedicure procedures should take approximately an hour and give you admirable results. Expect your pedicure to last about two week or longer if you applied additional topcoat.

Have fun with your pedicure process. Listen to relaxing music. Have the friends over for a pedicure party. You’re feet will thank you!

Cracked heels (aka fissures) are painful, unattractive, and very common, especially on those who love sandals or open back shoes. Fissures are often caused by extremely dry skin and can be worsened in the winter months when the air dry. Living in dry climates or going barefoot can also exacerbate fissures, making cracked heels a constant problem throughout the year.

For most people fissures are simply a cosmetic problem, but for those who suffer from deep fissures, the skin bleeds easily and the pain while walking can be intolerable. In addition to having a hard growth of dry skin on the outer edge of the heel, fissures may cause the heel to appear yellow or dark brown depending on the skin type.

CAUSES OF CRACKED HEELS

* Dry skin

* Obesity

* Heel Spurs

* Eczema or psoriases

* Prolonged standing

* In active sweat glands

* Excessive hot water use

* Abnormalities of gait (walking)

* Flat feet and high arched feet

* Open backed shoes can be a contributing factor

* Mal-alignment of the metatarsal bones (the bone structure of the sole of the foot)

Skin problems on our feet such as fissures can be a sign of health issues. If the cracks on your heels are very deep or bleeding, you may want to see your doctor.

Today’s technicians demand a product that is reputable, easy to use, cost effective, but most importantly, a product that works!! This new product is Footlogix with Dermal Integration Technology™. Where Medi meets Pedi™.

The brilliance behind DIT ™ technology:

• It maintains the integrity of the “active” ingredient(s) and ensures optimum biological affect to the skin

• It is a patented trans-dermal technology with European roots and North American innovation

• This Mousse allows for bacteria-free dispensing which aids in protecting damaged skin against infections

• This Mousse forms a safe protective barrier just beneath the skin’s surface and with no greasy outer layer,

the skin retains its ability to transpire normally.

Why is this important?

This Mousse mimics the skin’s own composition, enabling it to gently penetrate the outer layers of the skin. By doing so, this product moisturizes with maximum efficiency. The secret to healthy skin of the feet is providing hydration to the layers that need it. Footlogix with DIT ™ simply, is the product that delivers this hydration system instantaneously.

Incorporating Footlogix products into your normal pedicure procedure is very simple. You DO NOT have to change any of your procedures. The use of the Footlogix Foot Soak 13 will replace whatever you are currently using in the foot soak. The Footlogix Professional Massage Formula 19 will replace what you currently use to massage the feet and legs. The Footlogix Callus Off 18 is the only additional product and its use is outlined below. Enjoy your new products and we look forward to hearing from you whenyou are ready for more!

1. Use 1 teaspoon of Footlogix Foot Soak 13 per gallon of water and soak feet for your usual allotted time.

2. After all masks and scrubs are completed, spray Footlogix Callus Off 18 Callus Softener on all calluses and around cuticle prior to cleaning around toenails and removing calluses. Footlogix Callus Off 18 is a great replacement for your cuticle remover. Allow Footlogix Callus Off 18 to absorb for 2-3 minutes before using the foot file. Re-apply as needed during the callus removal process or to rinse off dust.

3. Footlogix Callus Off 18 does not need to be rinsed or washed off, as it will benefit the skin.

4. When it is time for foot and leg massage, use Footlogix Professional Massage Formula 19 for very dry feet.

Do you neglect your feet? When it comes to caring for our body, one aspect we tend to neglect is our feet. It’s easy to take feet for granted, but if you stop to think about how much your feet do for you daily and how much longer you wish them to do so, you may begin giving them the attention they deserve.

From standing to sports, feet are often the hardest working extremities. Think of how strong your feet are as they carry the weight of your entire body and get you where you want to go. For this reason foot care is very important in order to keep your feet healthy, strong, and beautiful.

Follow this simple foot care routine (three times a week) and visit Total Beauty Experience for all your foot care accessories and you’ll be giving your feet the care they deserve.

Foot Bath: Give your feet a good soak. A foot bath can be an invigorating treat for tired, sore feet.

Peppermint essential oil is used for boosting blood circulation and reducing pain of aching feet.

Use lavender essential oils to relieve aches and reduce swelling.

A lukewarm foot bath infused with Dead Sea Salts will do wonders to alleviate muscle tension. The rich blend of minerals captured within is proven to have immediate relaxing and soothing effects.

Archipelago® Milk Foot Soak create the perfect moisturizing soak that naturally cleanses, softens and deodorizes the feet. Dissolve generous amount in hto water. Soak tired and soar feet for a minimum of five minutes.

Stimulate the nerve endings of your feet by placing a cup of marbles or smooth round stones into the bath water. Gently roll your feet on top and around the stones, and enjoy the sensation.

Stretch the muscles of your feet by picking up the stones with your toes, flex and contract your feet and toes, let go and repeat.

Enjoy a soothing foot bath during your next pedicure.

Exfoliate Feet: Exfoliation increases the circulation, stimulates the lymph flow, removes dead skin and smoothes the skin’s surface. Be gentle when applying to the top of the foot.

Begin by buffing the calluses and dry skin on your feet with a pumice stone. Use gentle back and forth strokes to remove the dead, dry outer layers.

Draw a soothing foot bath. Soak feet for at least five minutes with your favorite essential oils and/or Dead Sea Salts to soften the skin.

Apply a exfoliating cream or foot polish to one foot at a time. Rub cream in massaging circular motions, then return foot to bath to rinse away cream. We recommend the following exfoliating creams available at Total Beauty Experience:

Thymes Essentials AHA Foot Cream, a gental exfoliate with alpha hydroxy acid fruit complex as shea butter and sunflower oil moisturize, and tea tree oil and vegetable protein extract refresh and deodorize tired feet.

Archipelago® Sugar Polish is suitable for all skin types. Choose your favorite among Coconut, Vanilla, and Mango then allow the sugar to gently slough away dead cells. Soy proteins, antioxidants and dried milk solids combine together to keep feet hydrated and soft.

After rinsing and soaking feet, pat them dry with a warm towel. Massage your favorite foot moisturizer into the top and bottoms of your feet. Your skin will lock in the moisture from the foot bath so that your feet continue to be soft and smooth. We recommend the following foot creams available at Total Beauty Experience:

Enriched Intensive Foot Cream by AHAVA is a soothing foot cream that acts deeply to alleviate the itchiness, redness and scaling of dry feet. Dermud’s special blend of Dead Sea mud, minerals and plant derivatives moisturizes as it soothes and repairs, restoring youthful vitality to your feet.

Dermalogica’s ultra-rich, long-lasting body cream will help heal and relieve extra dry skin. This unique, liquefying formula is also ideal for all-over, deeply-moisturizing body massage. Free of essential oils and containing no artificial fragrance or color, this cream will condition, smooth and protect your feet.

Body Time® Orange Rosemary Hand & Foot Care Cream is an intensive treatment cream with protective and nourishing botanicals that stimulate circulation, moisturize deeply and soothe even the most severe foot and hand problems, including calloused heels and puffy and swollen feet and hands that are regularly exposed to extreme cold. Energizing essential oils of rosemary, blood orange and sweet orange will stimulate your senses.

Foot Massage: There is nothing like a good foot massage! Done correctly, a foot massage can do wonders for the feet but can also promote healing and relaxation in other parts of the body as well.

Foot massages done by a significant other can be a great way to start a romantic evening. Even if the foot massage is done by a friend, the benefits can be very pleasant. In either case, recline your body on a sofa or bed to fully relax.

Solo foot massages can be done in a comfortable chair, preferably a recliner with padded arms. Sit back and prop one foot up on your lap and let the other rest extended in front of you and follow the procedures below.

Use your favorite massage oil or lotion. Rub the oil or cream onto both hands vigorously to warm them before beginning the massage.

On the top of the foot begin a long, slow, firm, stroking motion with your thumbs, starting at the tips of the toes and sliding back away from you, all the way up to the ankle; then retrace your steps back to the toes with a lighter stroke. Repeat this step three to five times.

Release tension in the inner and outer longitudinal arches with simple arch presses. Using the heel of one hand, push hard as you slide along the arch from the ball of the foot toward the heel and back again. Repeat five times. Apply as much pressure as it is comfortable but not painful.

Ankle rotations are a great way to loosen joints and relax feet.

Gently pull and squeeze toes. This massage can be very calming. Grasp the foot beneath the arch. With the other hand, beginning with the big toe, hold the toe with your thumb on top and index finger beneath. Starting at the base of the toe, slowly and firmly pull the toe, sliding your fingers to the top and back to the base. Now repeat, but gently squeeze and roll the toe between your thumb and index finger, working your way to the tip and back to the base. Repeat these two movements on the remaining toes.

Caring for your feet can be life transforming. You may even choose to do one or more of the above foot care methods as often as three times a week. Have fun with foot care – create a spa-like atmosphere at home with candles and soft music; invite friends and family over and have a foot care party.
