PROFESSIONAL LAUNDRY SECRETS

An intelligent approach to laundry can mean the difference between an heirloom tablecloth and a lovely dust rag.

To help prevent dark laundry from fading:

  • Treat stains before laundering; cold water isn’t as effective as hot water for removing stains.

  • Fasten buttons, snaps and zippers, and turn clothes inside out.

  • Fill your machine with cold water and select a short cycle.

  • Use a detergent formulated especially for dark loads.

  • Remove dryer-safe items from dryer while still damp. The friction of tumble dryers can hasten fading.

  • Dry away from direct sunlight.

To help keep white laundry bright:

  • Check the fabric care label and use the hottest water recommended.

  • Wrap the peel of a lemon in cheesecloth and drop it into the wash load. Or, dilute a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide with a cup of water and add it to the rinse cycle.

  • Dry outdoors in full sunlight whenever possible.

  • Use oxygen bleach as a laundry booster.

STAIN REMOVAL MADE EASY

Alas, no stain remedy is foolproof. Stains are often wilier than we are. Proceed with caution as you use these tips — if you suspect that a remedy may be too harsh or damaging to the fabric, modify accordingly. You may also consider Caldrea’s Stain Balm for effective stain removal.
